Entry 2:    Love Hearts and Roses

Date:        15th February 2010

Hello all. Hope everyone had a lovely Valentine’s Day.

We frequently get asked about the cake on our gallery with lots of toppers on it so I thought I’d tell you a bit about the design and the couple who it was made for.

Lizzie and Lawrence had already made lots of choices for their wedding last May to be held at the gorgeous Holme Pierrepont Hall in Nottingham but they wanted the cake to really add some fun.

Love hearts and red roses were the central theme of the wedding and were weaved through the design of the stationary, table settings, bouquets etc...

Lizzie brought along with her some pictures of the feel and style of what they wanted to achieve on the day. This was all really helpful to guide the consultation and make decisions about the overall design and effect.

Lizzie knew that she wanted all of the bridesmaids and the page boy involved in the cake design and we sketched out a few ideas of composition and style.

Photos were provided of the bridesmaids and their dresses. Lizzie had chosen a red rose corsage taffeta prom dress with a sweetheart neckline and cascading layers of fabric falling from a red rose corsage in a beautiful waterfall shape. A black netted underskirt increased the volume and glamour of the dresses.

Based on the sketches produced during the consultation it was decided that the final design would have Lizzie and Lawrence linking arms on the top tier while the bridesmaids and page boy would sit or stand on each of the lower tiers.

They chose four round tiers of rich fruit cake (6”, 8”, 10” and 12”) with sweet marzipan and brilliant white icing - this would provide a great back drop for their wedding party toppers.

We also discussed ways that the love heart theme could be subtly incorporated into the design and you can see how this was achieved in the final shots of the cake shown below.

Lizzie and Lawrence were really happy with the final cake and the way it complemented the theme of their day.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been speaking to a few people who are also having red as the main colour of their wedding but want something a bit different for their secondary colours to keep it looking contemporary. This has got me searching around for inspiration to find some effective colour combinations that could feature in peoples themes. I’ll put these together and post them for my next entry on the blog in the next few days so please check back soon.

Lizzie also sent on details about all the accessories such as shoes, hair and the bouquets along with close-up shots of the wedding dress fabrics and beading.
